Jesus was issuing a serious warning out of love. If we allow ourselves to forget/minimize/justify the bottomless nature of our own sin and the unpayable debt that we’ve been forgiven, and if that selective amnesia causes us to become people who “choke” our spiritual siblings for a pittance that we feel is owed to us, Jesus leaves no room for argument—we are putting ourselves in danger of judgment outside of forgiveness.
